Durban Big5 Overnight Safari

Big 5 Safari From Durban

Durban Big5 safari guide Paul, had a fantastic safari with a great Spanish couple. This Big5 safari from Durban was to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park.

All they wanted on their Big5 safari was giraffe and elephants.

Early on into our Big Five safari we were very lucky. As we drove into the safari park a small Journey of 3 giraffe crossed in front of us, awesome couldn’t ask for a better start to our 3 day safari.

I decided to take my time to get to our overnight accommodation, Hilltop Camp. Check in is from 14h00. A slow safari drive on the main road and we had 3 different rhino sightings, a large breeding herd of buffalo on the road and later 3 big buffalo bulls “Dagga Boys”. A family herd of nyala and a troop of baboons.

That late afternoon safari drive was excellent, with plenty giraffe moving around and a herd of elephants feeding on both sides of the road, before crossing and heading off to the river ..

The following morning saw us up early with breakfast packs in hand, targeting lions for the day.

The southern side of the safari park has 6 prides of lions, so is the best place to be looking. Took us a while but en route we found 3 of the Big 5 on numerous occasions and some awesome kudu bulls, very large antelope with huge curly Horns.

We found some lionesses around 10am. Six females, all sleeping in the open, was a great sighting.

Early success gave us time to get back to the camp and relax a bit before our next afternoon drive.

We finished off our Big5 safari on the last day with a safari boat estuary cruise. Here we saw hippo, crocodile and numerous bird species.
