Durban Big 5 Day Safari
Durban Safari guide Paul collected Richard and Sharon for a quick 1 Day Durban Big5 Safari.
I collected our guests for their Durban Big5 Day Safari in the early morning. We arrived at Durban’s best Big5 safari park, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park gate at 09h00. After formalities we entered the safari park only to run into a family of warthogs going about their daily business, grazing and using their snouts to dig up succulent roots.
The safari park has had a little rain and as a result now has lush fresh green grass everywhere. This makes for fantastic sightings of grazing animals. Large herds of buffalo have moved into the north of the safari park and with them predators have followed.
We spotted rhino in the distance and zebras, wildebeest and buffalo were some of the first sightings.
I moved on looking for the elephants, only to spot some lions lounging on a hillside.

The elephants still eluded us so we went along to Hilltop Camp for a good lunch. Hilltop Camp is the premier camp inside the safari park. The camp offers great views of the valley below. A stunning backdrop to enjoy whilst having lunch. Hilltop Camp has a self-guided trail with great birding and frequent sightings of Samango monkeys.
After lunch we continued our Big5 safari drive. The elephant search continued and we were lucky to come across herds crossing into the interior. Small herds of 12 to 15 at a time came out onto the road then disappeared into the forests. About 50 Elephants in total.
That was a great way to finish our day safari from Durban and we set our sights back to returning to Durban.
